Well written and informative. Unusually lucid for a book on the law. Author occasionally lets his politics slip, but it's his book after all.This would be a good companion text for any professional responsibility course in law school. It goes over the Model Code, Model Rules and Restatement. It discusses conflicting policy considerations and alternative resolutions reached by different courts. Good stuff. It will help you write a strong essay on a final exam.If you are taking the MPRE, however, this book won't help much. The discussion of different rules just confuses the issue--for the MPRE all you need is the Model Rules. Also, there are several topics on the MPRE which are not covered in this book, the most obvious example being the ABA Model Code of Judicial Conduct. My advice, if you are taking the MPRE, is to read the rules and do as many practice questions as humanely possible. That's all the study you'll ever need for the MPRE.Also worth mentioning is that very few practicing attorneys will find this a useful reference. This is an academic discussion. It covers the Model rules, not the rules in the jurisdiction where you practice. So just do what everyone else does--call the state bar ethics hotline when you have a question, and let them deal with it.
This book does not meet the high standards of writing and explanation that the E&E series typically provides. Most E&E authors divide the subject into discrete topics, explain them one-by-one, and then provide concrete examples and explanations. The Model Rules of Professional Conduct are theoretically perfect for this kind of format, but I was VERY disappointed in how poorly organized and useless this edition is. The author offers more of a wide-ranging conversation and theoretical commentary on professional responsibility rather than explanations and applications of the rules. In fact, a good portion of the introduction is a defense of the MPRE rather than a get-down-to-business E&E. When the author finally DOES get around to the rules, the explanations and the examples are often far to simplistic to be of any use to the average law student. All of the major bar exam prep companies offer free study guides to the MPRE. I found these far more specific and far more helpful when I studied for both the MPRE and my ABA mandated Professional Responsibility class at my law school.
This was an incredibly well-written, clear, easy-to-use book. Unlike many E&Es, the textual descriptions explaining the concepts were very helpful. I read through this book in order to obtain a comprehensive understanding of Professional Responsibility in preparation for my exam. It was actually a pretty quick and (dare I say it?) enjoyable read, unlike a lot of legal supplements. The examples and explanations themselves were also clear, informative, and to the point. I highly recommend this book for anyone taking professional responsibility!
Examples and Explanations are a life saver come finals season. For Professional Responsibility, I was so lost. There are so many model rules and what they say is not always what they mean. UGH. Went through every section of this book and the Q&A book and got a 3.75! I use E&E for basically every class. No regrets.
This is definitely a helpful supplement. The book is most useful as a supplement to the Legal Professions (or Ethics) class than it is for MPRE practice, but if you're getting this to help you do well in the class, you probably won't be disappointed. This explains the model rules of ethics, it is not a practice MPRE book.

I ended up returning this. Wasn't very helpful. PR is a very self explanatory class. I found the Emmanuel outline to be a better PR supplement
This book is a great tool in furthering a reader's/student's study of professional responsibility in the legal world. It helps to break down the key/important factors/rues/codes of ethics that attorneys must abide by. I strongly recommend this text for any law student who is enrolling in a professional responsibility course.
